Dear Friends and Family,
You have chosen to stay at a special and rare property... As of the 1970s there has been a moratorium on building this close to the sand in California, leaving only a few thousand places like this in all of the CA's 840 mile coastline.
And endangered... The world's ocean levels are in a cycle of rapid raising... Combining that with the prohibition of constructing a seawall, this property (and all like it) are expected to not be maintainable beyond 2040. You have made a great choice to visit (while you can) and make irreplaceable memories for you and your family.
Now that your booking is in place, we wish to share a few things about your stay at the beach...
Only 20 steps stand between our lower floor door you and the sand. Bring sunscreen.
SandCastle is located in unincorporated Santa Cruz county, right on the white sands of La Selva Private beach, just south of Manresa Beach and about a mile north of Sunset Beach, in the beautiful Monterey Bay. Here you will enjoy beautiful surf and sand and you just might see dolphins and whales right from the balcony. Bring a camera.
In Google maps… search for:
380 Oceanview Drive, la selva beach.
Occasionally, other mapping programs don’t know “La Selva beach”, so you can try:
380 Oceanview Drive, Watsonville.
The homes in this neighborhood are in buildings of 4 or 6 units per building. Each building is separated by stairways that lead to the beach. Our unit is the last (end unit) of one of the buildings. It’s next door neighbor is connected and both units share a driveway right at the front (there are no garages). The driveways are on the narrow side... you CAN fit 4 cars on the driveway (2 per unit) but it’s real tight. So it’s best to park a single car right in front of the door to our unit so you have ample room to get in and out. If you have a second car coming, or are expecting guests, have them park in the street right across from our unit (there is a retaining wall on the road and you will see several cars parallel parked near that wall.
The door is right by the address, (it’s red in color). And it opens to the top floor (of 3) where the master bedroom is. It has a keypad and a nearby “Ring Doorbell”. If you have trouble getting in, just ring the doorbell and I can talk to you from my phone. There shouldn’t be a problem.
Put your palm on the black keypad on the door... it will
Light up exposing numbers. Press your 4-digit number (that you provided us when booking) then the check mark. It will make a terrible grinding sound and become unlocked. There is no alarm.
The home is somewhat automated, including the locks. So you may hear the grinding sound when there is nobody around. It just means that the house thinks you left but the door is still Unlocked. It just locks itself. It has that feature in both the top floor (front door ) and the bottom floor (beach door), so it isn’t uncommon for it to lock if the whole family is enjoying the beach. Just type in the code like you did when you arrived (both doors are the same).
When you leave for any extended period and want to lock either door, just place your whole palm on the black keypad panel and you will hear the grinding sound... viola it’s locked. In rare instances it has difficulty locking if the door isn’t closed all the way... it will beep a few times... just pull the door closed a bit while it’s grinding and that will help.
While you are in the house, just lock and unlock the door like a regular deadbolt from inside the house.
SandCastle offers unobstructed views of the entire monterrey coastline. The first thing you will want to do upon arrival is to open the blinds and see the stunning views of the surf.
Both the top floor and the middle floor are equipped with electrically retractable blinds (opaque in the master and light filtering in the middle floor, family room).
Open the blinds by finding a remote nearby that looks like this picture... press and hold the up button until the blinds start to smoothly move up (then you can let go - they will stop at the top, fully opened position).
Lowering the blinds is the same way, just press and hold the down button. Beware of any obstacles in the way of the blinds... if something is in the way, they may ball-up and abruptly slide off the obstacle causing a jarring effect that has in the past caused the blind to fall from the wall... I usually just watch the blinds fully close.
You will notice there are no screens. This is because the screens hamper the great view. Besides there are almost no insects this close to the beach. Don’t worry about leaving windows open (including the slider)... I do it all the time - it adds the ambient ocean sound that I find enjoyable.
Also, Sea/Salt air takes a toll on the exterior side of the windows and they become dirty within a few days. So, they are almost always hazy (as we only go to the house every few weeks when we clean them), so they will likely be somewhat dirty when you arrive (housekeepers don't do windows), or they will become dirty during your stay. If you want to clean them, it takes just a few minutes. There is a bucket and a squeegee in the cabinet in the middle floor bathroom. Just put warm water in the bucket from the kitchen sink and use the fabric/sponge/netting side of the squeegee to scrub the window with the warm water, then use the rubber side to scrape off the excess water. It will make a world of difference.
I don't recommend doing this with the master window because there is a very narrow ledge that you have to stand on (after climbing out of the window). I do it... and the 80 year old woman who owned the property before me did it (I know, it shocked me too), but it IS dangerous and you must be very sure footed.
Please utilize the beach in a safe manner. Though the beach is patrolled by California Rangers and trained Life Guards, they will not always be present. Be aware that there is a significant rip-tide and undertow at times. Only strong swimmers advised. Also, there is an abundance of life living in Monterrey bay…
Please be respectful of all of the natural beauty and animals you may encounter. The lifeguards may open and close the water for swimming for various reasons. Please respect their direction.
The beach technically closed at sunset but it is rarely patrolled so you frequently see people late into the night.
Though fires on the beach are permitted only in State-Approved fire rings (there are none on this beach and there is no way to obtain one), so most everyone makes fires anyway. You will likely see your neighbors enjoying a fire, roasting marshmallows etc. Other than on 4th of July, I have NEVER seen a ranger ask someone to put out a fire. If you want to have a fire on the beach, please bring fire wood, but understand there is a chance that a ranger may ask you to extinguish it. It you make a fire please use a fire bucket as it will help keep the beach clean and any ranger will more likely look the other way. Please put extinguish your fire before you retire and come back in the morning to pick up the fire bucket and/or any charred wood around the fire site to put the bucket back in its storage location..
IMPORTANT... Don't carry the bucket after a fire until it has sat overnight... It WILL be HOT. Only after it has cooled, can you bring it upstairs to it's storage place. If you arrive and the bucket already has ash in it, you may empty the fire bucket into the trash ONLY if it is entirely cool to the touch (i.e. it has stood dormant for more than 24 hours) hot coals inside the bucket can hurt you or start a fire in the trash can.
I use a fire bucket like in the picture. It's kept under the bench in the front of the unit. If you don't see one there, it probably got rusted out and someone discarded it. If that is the case, you can get one at home depot and I will re-imberse you. Just put it under the bench on the driveway when you are done using it so others can use it too. There is a Home Depot in Watsonville about 5 miles away (there is a Safeway nearby Home Depot for last minute grocery needs too).
Near the middle floor beach windows (on the left) is a beach light switch (it’s labeled). If you want light on the beach at night go ahead and turn that on. I don’t generally do that (unless I’m looking for lost keys) because after the beach light warms up it’s about as bright as the sun and you can’t see any stars. Plus if you leave it on and try to sleep, the master windows let in quite a lot of the light.
This light operates on a mechanical timer and stays on only for a limited amount of time (HOA regulations).
Your dog is welcome on the beach but must be leashed and under your control the whole time. If a ranger sees your dog off leash, you may get a fine, but most likely you will get a warning on the first occurrence. Please pick up after your dog... Neighbors will certainly complain about dog messes.
Alcohol is prohibited on CA state beaches. If the ranger sees you drinking on the beach, he will ask you to stop or may possibly ask you to leave the beach. I have seen neither happen, but I needed to tell you. You may just get a warning... which is the usual case for your first offense. If you are drinking out of a solo cup, they have plausible deniability... dont let them see beer or wine bottles.
You can drink on the middle floor balcony and enjoy the beach without even getting sandy!
In the unit, the cabinet nearest the dining table on the middle floor is a pull-out garbage bin. Bags are under the sink. We use the front bin for trash and the back bin for recycling. When the bins get full, the bags can be brought to the following locations...
Next to where I recommended you park there is a large wooden cabinet. The main trash can is in that cabinet. Trash day is Friday the collectors will come between 7am and 11am.
There are several recycling bins at the far end (dead end) of Oceanview Drive.
There is a k-cop coffee machine in the kitchen. Oven, microwave, dishwasher... all the regular stuff. Just look in all the cabinets - you should have everything you need.
Also, there is a full-size washer and dryer in the middle floor bathroom area. Please feel to use it but remember to bring detergent (because its not regularly stocked).
This unit is equipped with a full size washer and dryer. If you would like to do laundry during your stay, please be sure to bring your favorite High-Efficiency detergent as we do not stock laundry supplies at the unit.
There is a desk in the Master Bedroom, complete with white board, tack board, and a pair of 4K computer monitors mounted to the wall. Feel free to use this space as your office away from home. There are USB cables in the desk drawer, please leave them for future guests.
Or whatever else you like to cook outdoors...
Great! Everything is there, Just light it up and enjoying BBQ-ing with the gas grill on the 2nd floor deck overlooking the sand and surf!
Sandcastle is equipped with 300Megabit networking. It is all wireless and works well throughout the whole unit, though the router is on the top floor so it works best up there.
WiFi: ProNet
Pass: prosoft4725
The top and middle floors both have gas fireplaces. Just flip the switch on the left side of each fireplace to turn on the fire, using one of 3 positions:
The top is depressed - The fire is manually on, it will stay on forever, so please turn it off when you are done.
The bottom is depressed - The fire is manually off
The center is depressed - Automatic/voice activated mode. Read the section about home automation below for more details.
If the fireplace doesn't go on, regardless of position, the pilot light may have blown out in the wind – it happens sometimes. If that is the case, contact me and we will see if we can diagnose it together over the phone.
The bottom floor has a baseboard heater installed. It does a nice job of limiting the humidity of that room, but it doesnt actually make things much warmer (the heat just runs up the stairs). We find its best to have the heat level set to about 4. The heater will turn itself off when it detects noobody in the room (after an 8 hour delay).
On the middle floor, you will see a Nest Thermostat (for heat only). It is usually set pretty low to defer to the fireplaces to make the heat. However feel welcome to turn it up while you are waiting for the fireplaces to heat up. It will turn itself back down when it detects everyone has left the house.
This thermostat is touch sensitive on its outer casing... to turn the heat up or down, rub your finger on the right outer edge of the thermostat... UP to increase temperature, and DOWN to decrease temperature.
The bottom floor has 2 queen beds each in their own cubby hole. Kinda reminds me of a sleeper car on a train. They are great and comfortable. But they are a pain in the rear to make the beds. So don’t worry about that... housekeeping knows how to do it... they are used to it.
The middle floor couch unfolds into a remarkably comfortable memory foam bed. There are bed linens in the middle of the master closet.
The master bed on the top floor is a split cal-king memory foam adjustable bed. You can adjust them into a sitting position so you can see the surf while in bed. The remote is self explanatory... there is one for each side and they should be in or on the accompanying nightstands.
This is a cable-cutting household, meaning there is no "Cable TV", just internet. Each floor has a flat screen TV hanging on the wall. We usually leave several services (netflix, hulu, amazon prime) logged-in with our rental account. Please be responsible and not purchase any content with these accounts (though I'm not sure it will allow this), and please leave them logged in for the next guests to enjoy. If however, you must log in to any service to enjoy your own preferences, please remember to log out to protect your account.
All TVs are equipped with Amazon FireTV which controls all TV programming. Press the power button to turn on the TV, then press the home button (the one that looks like a house) to get to the main menu. From there, you can select all the major TV services. Please leave them logged in for the next guest. All the other buttons are self explanatory.
What is the microphone button?
With the microphone button, you may talk to the TV to evoke a response. To use this feature, just press and hold the button while speaking. When done speaking, release the button and an action will (hopefully) take place. For example, press and hold the button to say some of the following...
“What’s the weather like”
The tv displays a weather forecast and some weather related information will be spoken.
"Watch CBS"
Alexa will respond by tuning to live CBS in hulu
"Go to Disney Plus"
Alexa will respond by going to the Disney+ home screen
You can say many things... go ahead and explore.
I am in the process of making this home completely smart. It's a work in progress and has been under way for several years (even before the big smarthome movement).
Speaking to the house and Alexa
There are several Amazon Echo speakers throughout the house that can play music and listen to your household commands. You use the keyword "Alexa" to begin a command. Please note, your voice is not recorded and you are ignored at all times until you say the Alexa wake word.
IMPORTANT... If you do not want the house to listen to you (or if someone in your family is named Alexa), you can mute the microphones on each speaker as needed... there is a mute button on each speaker. When muted, a red ring will appear around the speaker. However, while muted Alexa will not be able to performa any of the commands below. Please unmute when you leave so Alexa commands will work for the next guest.
Read more information about Alexa Privacy, the following this link...
https://www.amazon.com/Alexa-Privacy-Hub/b?ie=UTF8...
You can say anything to Alexa as long as you prefix the sentence with the word "Alexa" such as "Alexa, play music.", which will result in music playing form the speaker nearer you. Some more examples include...
Commands relating to current events/activities
"Alexa, read me the news"
"Alexa, what is the weather?"
"Alexa, what time is it?"
Commands relating to Home control
"Alexa, set a timer for 10 minutes."
"Alexa, set an alarm for 7 am."
"Alexa, cancel the alarm"
"Alexa, lock the upper door." or "Alexa, lock the lower door" or "Alexa, lock all doors." - For security, you cannot unlock the doors in this way.
"Alexa, turn on the master fireplace" - off works too and you can refer to "family" instead of "master" for the family room fireplace
"Alexa, turn off all fireplaces"
"Alexa, turn on the Master light" - or off... also works for "kitchen", "family" (for family room), and "bedroom 2" (for bottom floor bedroom)
"Alexa, turn off all lights" - turn off all of the above lights
Commands relating to Music
"Alexa, play music in the master bedroom" - Plays music only in the master bedroom.
"Alexa, play music everywhere" - same as above, but plays music in all speakers throughout the house.
"Alexa, play Jimmy Buffet music." - shuffles popular music from named artist.
"Alexa, play 80s hits."
All music is provided by Spotify.
Commands relating to Trivia/Information
"Alexa, how much does a whale weigh?"
"Alexa, who was the 15th president?"
The future is soon
There are thousands of commands like the ones above. Experiment.
I'm adding commands monthly, so if you have a request, shoot me an email and perhaps it will be in place for your next stay!
Next release enables:
Alexa, open the blinds (and close)
Alexa, I'm home - Adjusts, lights, blinds, heater, and fireplaces bases on current situation (time, temperature, etc)
Alexa, goodbye - Closes Blinds, Turns off, lights, heater, and fireplaces, locks all doors in 2 minutes
Automated lights
Some lights might turn on when you walk around the house (this is especially prominent in areas that do not have windows and lighting is limited). If a light turns on, don't worry, it will turn off when you leave the area. Most lights (the ones in areas that have windows) however do not turn on automatically but function like regular lights and you have to turn them on manually. However, in all cases if you are very still for a long duration they may flash (indicating they're considering turning off)... just wave your arms around, or stand and up it will notice you and keep the lights on longer.
Bedtime Mode
There is a colored rope light mounted under the master bed. When you walk into the room at night the light will turn on as a nightlight (to help keep you from stubbing you toes on anything). However the drawback is that after you turn off the light and get in bed, it may detect your motion when you toss/turn and reactivate the nightlight. If that bothers you (it does bother me), I added a feature that disables the nightlight until morning... just double-click the down direction of the light switch (like double clicking a mouse). The switch is located to the far right of the vanity and is labeled (see picture).
Turning on bedtime mode does the following:
-> Turns off all lights in the master suite (only).
-> Disables the motion sensors in the Master Bedroom.
The bathroom still turns on at a very low level as a nightlight when you enter
-> Locks all exterior doors.
-> The wall switch will issue a faint “beep-beep” to indicate “Bedtime Mode On”.
By the way, to invoke Bedtime Mode, you can also say "Alexa, Bedtime." assuming the microphones are not muted.
Bedtime Mode resets and restores the master bedroom to automatic lighting (default behavior) every morning.
Finally, since I wrote the automation system (and integrated alexa into it) myself and it’s never been tested outside my own homes, it may occasionally have bugs and do something unexpected. If you find that to be the case, text me and I can disable it remotely. The house works fine in manual mode too.
In the master bedroom, we store clothes and personal items in a locked cabinet in the Master, and in the right hand side of the master closet. Both are labeled. There is ample storage everywhere else for your belongings during your stay... Feel free to use them, but please check to make sure you dont leave personal items when you leave... No telling when we will be able to retreive them for you... it is sometimes weeks between our visits to SandCastle.
To help get you started on beach mode, I have provided access for you to the beach camera. This camera is mounted on the ceiling of the middle floor deck (in fact you can see a bit of railing in the frame). Though the camera is not known to the public, it can see you if you are standing at the railing. Granted, standing at the railing makes you visible to everyone in the beach, but if being in camera makes you uneasy let me know and I can disable it remotely. On the other hand, if you want to tell friends and family about the link so they can see you (and be jealous of you) playing in the beach. Feel free to call them and give them the url and wave to them from the sand.
